The Broncos couldn’t be happier with D’Brickashaw Ferguson’s decision to retire earlier this week. Just one day later they were finally able to dump Ryan Clady’s salary. The Broncos traded Ryan Clady and a 7th round pick to the Jets for the Jets 5th round pick.
Denver was clearly prepared to move away from Clady once they signed Russell Okung to a five year deal back in March, but up until now couldn’t find a suitor for the left tackle.
Enter the New York Jets, the Jets desperately needed a left tackle with Ferguson now gone. By trading a 5th round pick in exchange for a 7th round pick, they were able to fill the void. Clady is a great player, but has struggled with injury missing all of last season. A polar opposite from Ferguson, who hasn’t missed a single game in his 10 year career.
Even with Clady’s injury history, this is a good trade for both parties. The Jets needed a proven LT and the Broncos freed up cap space while gaining a 5th round pick. Now Denver has more money to pursue a QB and New York can address other needs in the upcoming draft.
